What is a sworn French translation?

A sworn French translation is an official translation between Dutch and French made by a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator binds a signed statement, an official stamp and a signature to a copy of your document, which is what lets Dutch authorities such as the IND, your municipality, the courts and universities treat it as the official version.

What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?

In the Netherlands the two terms describe the same thing. A certified translation here means a sworn translation: one produced by a court-sworn, Rbtv-registered translator who attaches a signed statement and an official stamp. In some other countries a certified translation can be a simple signed declaration without that legal standing, so when a Dutch authority asks for a certified translation it means the sworn version.

If you are sending a document abroad, check with the receiving authority whether they need the sworn translation legalised with an apostille as well.

How much does a sworn French translation cost?

A sworn French translation costs from €41 for the first page, with each following page at €75. That base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (PDF by e-mail) is an optional add-on for €9.95, and registered shipping within the Netherlands is €9.95, free from €299. Standard delivery is 5 to 7 working days, with express available as an option.

Sworn French translations — where and why they are used

French is the third most requested language for sworn translations in the Netherlands. The demand comes from France itself, French-speaking Belgium (Wallonia and Brussels), Luxembourg and, to a lesser extent, French-speaking Africa (Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Morocco, Algeria, Madagascar). France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Algeria (since 9 July 2026) are part of the Hague Apostille Convention; for Senegal and Morocco an apostille is available but follows a different path, and Madagascar still requires consular legalisation through the embassy.

A sworn French translation needs attention for the difference between French and Belgian French, particularly in legal terms, and for the correct rendering of French authority names such as Préfecture, Tribunal administratif and Cour de cassation. The terminology matters: "avocat" carries a different role from a Belgian "pleider", and a Belgian "notaire" holds powers that a French one does not. Getting these wrong is a common reason a translation is sent back.

For a French mairie (for example when a Dutch national marries in France) and for a Belgian or Luxembourg municipality, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 applies: a Dutch birth or marriage certificate is accepted without an apostille, with a sworn French translation or a multilingual standard form. A notarial deed or a diploma falls outside that regulation and does get an apostille from a Dutch court; for Switzerland and Canada the apostille remains the route. We tell you which route applies before you order.

Common use cases

  • Préfecture (France) — marriage application with a Dutch birth certificate
  • Belgian municipality — registration in the population register (BRP extract)
  • French university — diploma recognition through Centre ENIC-NARIC France
  • Notary in Brussels — Dutch power of attorney or certificate of inheritance
  • Luxembourg labour market — Dutch employment statement and contract

Frequently asked questions: French translation

What is a sworn French translation?
A sworn Dutch–French translation is made by a translator sworn before a Dutch court and entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translation is bound to a copy of your document and carries the translator's signed statement and official stamp, which is why Dutch and French-speaking authorities accept it as official.
Who can make a certified Dutch–French translation?
Only a translator sworn before a Dutch district court and listed in the Rbtv, the register kept by Bureau Wbtv, for the Dutch–French pair. We work with Rbtv-registered French translators, so the translation meets the requirement of the authority that asked for it, backed by our acceptance guarantee.
How much does a sworn Dutch–French translation cost?
From €41 for the first page, with each following page at €75. French leads at €41, while other languages start at €61. That price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and the acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (€9.95), registered shipping (€9.95, free from €299) and an apostille (€99 per document) are optional.
How long does a sworn Dutch–French translation take?
Standard delivery is 5–7 working days. If you need it faster, express (2–3 working days, +50%, minimum €55) and same-day (shipped within 24 hours, +100%, minimum €75, ordered before 12:00) are available as options. The same-day option applies to Dutch ↔ English and French, so a French translation qualifies.
Do I need a sworn French translation for the IND?
The IND accepts foreign-language documents in a residence or naturalisation application only when a sworn (Rbtv) translator has translated them into Dutch, English, French or German. French is one of those accepted languages, so a sworn French translation meets the IND requirement, backed by our acceptance guarantee.
Can you translate my French diploma for use in the Netherlands?
Yes. A French diploma, transcript or grade list is assessed by Nuffic or DUO, which ask for a sworn translation when the document is not already in Dutch or English. We translate the diploma and supporting records so the assessing body can rely on the titles and marks they contain.
Do I also need an apostille for a French translation?
For use abroad, your document and sometimes the translation may need an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention. Netherlands Worldwide explains when it applies, and the receiving French-speaking authority sets the order. We can add the apostille for €99 per document when you order the translation.
Do I have to send the original documents?
In most cases a clear scan or photo is enough; the sworn translator binds the translation to that copy. Where a particular authority insists on a translation bound to the physical original, that is the exception. We tell you when that applies before you order.
